Dick is a 1978 graduate of the University of Maine, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.  His majors were in accounting and finance.

He began his career with a local firm in Bangor, Maine, followed by seven years at Ernst & Young in Portland, Maine.  He is a founding principal of Dawson, Smith, Purvis & Bassett.

Dick’s significant experience includes reviews and compilations of financial statements; tax and financial planning and compliance; transaction planning, including acquisitions and sales of businesses; stock option planning; charitable gifting; trust and estate planning issues.  His areas of concentration include privately-owned business; high wealth individuals; trusts; tax-exempt organizations, including private foundations.

 He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Taxation Committee of the AICPA and the Maine Society of CPAs. He also serves on the Board of Directors and is a past treasurer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Portland.

Dick lives in Cumberland, Maine with his wife, Valerie.  They have two adult children, Erika and Ryan, who also live in Cumberland with their spouses.  Dick is an avid baseball fan and also enjoys golf, running, hiking and other outdoor activities.
