Dick is a 1978 graduate of the University of Maine with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. His majors were in accounting and finance. He began his career with a local firm in Bangor, Maine and joined Ernst & Whinney in 1983 where he practiced in the audit and tax departments until October 1990.
Dick provides accounting and tax services to business clients in various industries, including professional sports teams, insurance companies and agencies, architectural and law firms, veterinary practices, commercial real estate, and manufacturing companies. He serves high-wealth individual clients and has extensive experience in the areas of charitable giving and estate and trust tax issues. He also provides accounting and tax services to many tax-exempt organizations and assists new organizations applying for tax-exempt status.
David E. Smith, CPA (dsmith@dspbcpa.com)
David is a 1981 graduate of Husson College with a B.S. degree in Public Accounting. Upon graduating from Husson College, David joined Ernst & Whinney and remained there until October 1990.
David currently spends a significant portion of his time serving physicians throughout Maine and New Hampshire. The remainder of his time is devoted to working with privately-owned businesses and their owners, and providing litigation support services.
Eric A. Purvis, CPA/ABV, MST, CVA (epurvis@dspbcpa.com)
Eric is a 1985 graduate of Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts where he earned a B.S. in Accountancy. He later received his Masters in Taxation from Bentley College. He began his career with Ernst & Whinney in Portland, Maine, and remained there until October 1990.
Eric provides accounting and tax compliance services to various clients, including medical practices, privately-owned businesses, and not-for-profit entities. Eric is also credentialed in Business Valuation, and provides business valuation, litigation support, and forensic accounting services, and assists in structuring purchases and sales of businesses.
Joel H. Bassett, CPA/PFS, CMA (jbassett@dspbcpa.com)
Joel is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant, a Certified Internal Auditor, and a Personal Financial Specialist. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 1986, Joel joined Ernst & Whinney and practiced there until Dawson, Smith, Purvis & Bassett, P.A. was founded in October 1990.
Joel provides tax, accounting and financial consulting services to various businesses, including professional service firms such as physicians, engineers, architects and lawyers. He also practices in the specialty area of personal financial planning.
Joel received the silver medal for obtaining the second highest grades on the May 1987 C.P.A. examination. He is a past president of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland and currently serves on the boards of Port Resources and the Thomas Memorial Library Foundation.
